The Timex Triathlon has come and gone and I'm left with another 2nd place finish!
Overall, I'm quite satisfied with the result. Just minutes before the event began I noticed Finish racer Tom Soderdohl (8th at IM Kona last year!) and USA's Doug Friman (US Olympic Tri Alternate 2004) getting their bikes ready in the transition area. Along with eleven hundred other athletes I would have my work cut out for me trying to win this one. Although I didn't run my best, after a solid swim and bike I was able to sneak in ahead of Soderdhol at the finish. Unfortunately, Friman was out of reach and beat me by over two minutes overall - most of which he gained on the run. Racing an Olympic Triathlon in 1:54 at the end of the season makes me fairly happy overall, although this was a race I'd very much hoped to win.
In my final preparation for the SOMA Half Ironman I've been working extensively with Edgar over at Landis bike shop. Edgar has been preparing my new bright Yellow Trek TTX. Getting fitted to a new bike is a a lot more extensive than one might think and I am very particular and accept nothing but the best equipment. Accordingly, Edgar does lots and lots of tinkering!
My form is good and of course SOMA is a big event for me. I'm trying hard not to over train as my body this time of year only needs fine tuning, not the long base training that's so important in the early months of the season. Along with the Gainey Village bike rides on Tuesdays and Thursdays, I'm working extensively with Masters swim coach Johnny down at ASU. A little swim stroke fine tuning should never be overlooked! I think my chances of winning SOMA are strong and it would definitely be an amazing way to cap off a pretty good year. If anybody is in the Phoenix area, the SOMA Half Ironman will be at Tempe Town Lake on the morning of October 29th. You definitely would not regret going down there and checking it out! There will be lots of people working very showing everything from bright smiles to painful grimaces. Hope you can make it!
Thanks again to all of you for the support, see ya soon. Yours in sport,
Lewis Elliot
