2007 is underway!

After an eventful off-season, I broke the ice Sunday with a win at the Chandler Sprint Triathlon. A 400 meter pool swim, 12 mile bike, and 3 mile run, it only lasted 43 minutes. The day before the race I spent sun up to sun down training so I wasn't sure if I would be recovered for such a short and intense effort. Apparently, it worked out all right. These long training days on Saturdays have been a blast this year. They always start with a 7:00 AM Sun Devil Masters swim at the Cactus Pool. After 4-5 thousand meters swimming I stuff my cycling jersey pockets with as many Bora Bora bars as will fit. I then proceed to ride anywhere from 110-150 miles and end the ride at the track for some mile repeats. I've never committed to Ironman training like this before and I 've got confidence that it will all pay off this year at Ironman Arizona. This Sunday I am competing in the TriSports Desert Duathlon . I'll be going up against Olympic Champion Simon Whitfield and the rest of the Canadian National Triathlon Team. I 'll certainly have my work cut out for me but I'm going in to the race not only hoping but expecting to win!

The other day I received my new Toyota 4Runner from Jay Francis at Right-Toyota. What a great treat from a sponsor! This car is amazing and it's the first time I 've ever driven a car that was anywhere close to new. I drove off the lot with only 5 miles on it! Jay and the sales team are a great group of guys and I can't say enough good things about them. In starting the triathlon season there are so many logistical things one has to plan for and it makes me so thankful for all of my generous sponsors. Wellements, Max Muscle Mccormick Ranch, Right Toyota and The Village Health Clubs are really the only reason I 'm able to pursue this wonderful sport of triathlon!

One quick note about the state of triathlon as a sport. It's HEALTHY! There were over 100 kids under the age of 14 competing in the Chandler Sprint Triathlon over the weekend. I'm blown away by this and I can't believe the excitement everyone was experience there including myself. These little guys can really move and it just seems like such a wonderful sport for kids to compete in. I'm going to work as hard as possible with Tri-Scottsdale and 10-Hours to ensure that this growth continues among the youth, at least locally.

My swim times have come down about 5-7 seconds per 100 meters over this winter. I'm hoping this will translate into exiting the water with the elite of the elite swimmers and will in turn improve my bike and run. I never thought that swimming this well would be a reality and it certainly wasn't without help. I give thanks to Johnnie, Simon, and Laura with daily Sun Devil Masters coaching sessions for helping me improve. I will write again as soon as I have more good news, hopefully it won't be too long.

Thanks for reading, cheers,
Lewis
