The summer break is about to be over
It's been a while since my last entry, and the time is flying by. I'm now on an extended break from training which will come to an abrupt hault in August. At that time, I will put myself into "the zone" and prepare intensively for the Ironman Hawaii World Championships. This will include some of the most intense training I've ever done with my huge Saturday brick workouts and swimming masters 2-3 times daily! I may do a couple races between now and race day October 13th, but they will only be for training and good fun.
As I write this, I'm up in Billings, Montana helping my father prepare his house to be sold. Michelle and I made the drive up last weekend just in time for the Big Sky State Games. I managed to win the sprint triathlon over a surprisingly strong field. I hadn't planned on racing and didn't have my tri bike, so I raced Eddy Merckx-style without aerobars, tri-shoes, or an aero helmet. Fortunately, my run felt good and I was able to get out to a good lead there. It's always fun to do any kind of race back home in Montana, as it certainly brings back lots of childhood memories of bike races and fun runs.
Two weeks ago I travelled to France for the ITU Long-Course World Championships in L'Orient. The trip was incredible, and France was awesome. The people were what seemed to be overly nice and everybody there has this incredible passion for sport, and food. So, along with my team USA mates I did a lot of swim-bike-run and of course eating. Unfortunately, I hurt my back on the Wednesday before the race throwing my too-big-to-travel-Europe-with bike box on the TGV train. My back is sensitive, and it can't handle much beyond everyday training. It hurt leading up to the race but I was optimistic I could get through the double Olympic distance event. Right away on the swim it was quite sore, and on the bike it was a task just to reach my aerobars. This left me with my first and hopefully last DNF of the year, but I was optimistic it was nothing that a week or two of rehab couldn't cure. It feels good now, and I'm excited to get going again and put this race behind me!
After the event I traveled to Paris and spent a few days with my childhood foreign exchange student Igor Soukotine. Igor has a nice flat in Paris and he and his girlfriend were quite hospitable. I spent most of my time either out checking out the area or watching the French live coverage of the Tour de France trying to figure out what the commentator was saying. I missed Phil Ligget, but enjoyed this challenge.
Thanks again to all my incredible sponsors, it's a long list, you guys know who you are! I promise to update more often between now and Kona, as triathlon will be MY LIFE. Period
Cheers,
Lewis
