Kona is around the corner

It's crunch time now with the Ironman Kona World Championships right around the corner. Down in Arizona it's been a challenge getting all the training in considering the record-hot summer we've had down here! The race is October 13th, which leaves me about 40 days, and maybe 35 with any kind of quality training. My only result-related goal for the race is to learn, nothing really beyond that. Fitness-wise, I'm hoping to reach a new level and to push my body further than it has been pushed in the past. It will also be a fun vacation! Accompanying me will be Michelle, Shawn, and Theresa (thanks for the awesome homestay!). Beyond them, there's a chance some of my biological family will come if they're able to get away from the mainland for a few days.

There's a good chance I'll do the Nautica Malibu Triathlon in two weeks time, and maybe another small race before leaving for Hawaii. Right now I've not had the urge to really race much and the day in day out training with friends has been pretty enjoyable. Besides training I've been doing my normal overly-obsessive tooling around with new equipment looking for every last technical edge. These are probably more of a mental exercise for me, as I think it's fun knowing I'm putting everything into going as fast as possible.

After Kona, I'll do the 70.3 World Championships in Clearwater and then the Island 80 in the Turks and Caicos in early December. I'm looking forward to traveling to the Caribbean with some good friends and putting in a hard race in the process. After this event, perhaps I'll do the Rock N' Roll AZ Marathon. This has been a goal of mine for years but it's basically been an issue of laziness and lack of fitness that has kept me off the start line. Having never done an open marathon, this will be a good test! The race being in mid-January is perfect for a summertime triathlon schedule. This morning I had a friendly dialogue of ego and bravado with some of my best friends at Gainey Village as to what I think and they think I could run for a marathon. As always, maybe I'm overestimating myself but either way I guess we'll find out. For anyone who's wondering what I think I'll run, drop me a line and I'll give you the over-under in our betting ring...

I'd planned on putting some training log stuff up on here and I'll try to do that later this week. I've done nothing too crazy preparing so far and I'm hoping I force myself to do some epic workouts in the next few weeks that perhaps are worth sharing. Until then, keep on truckin' and thanks for reading.

Cheers,
Lewis
