Excited for 2008

With the Trisports.com Desert Duathlon less than ten days away I'm more than excited for 2008. How incredible it is that I've made many strides over the off-season in my training and speed. My swimming has recently gotten a fair amount faster and I'm so excited about a few new fantastic sponsors. All the while, the Suns acquired Shaq who should help lead this seasoned and worthy team to an NBA title!

The Desert Duathlon is always competitive, this year will be no different. I've heard top guys from all over are coming, I'm 80 percent sure I'm racing but not positive yet. I've discovered that the triathlon season is LONG, and that racing in February may not be the best way to be fast in October. It may not matter too much, but in 2008 I'm planning a lot more rest with multiple peaks throughout the year. Hopefully, this works, I have no reason to believe it won't.

I spent December and January laying fairly low. In December I headed back to Kona for the Annual Triathlete Magazine Swimsuit Edition photo shoot. The whole experience was incredible as that island seems a lot different when every waking moment doesn't revolve around triathlon. I made some great new friends and really enjoyed spending another week over there staying with the Triathlete Crew at the Sheraton in Kona. I couldn't help but do some light training on the Ironman course, even though I meant not to. John Duke made me feel incredibly lazy as most days he had finished his swim, bike, and run all prior to my morning alarm. The models and crew were beyond cool, I feel so happy to have been part of this.

January, I headed home to Montana. It was great, I experienced some REAL COLD. One day was about 10 below zero, seriously. I went out for an hour run, it lasted about half an hour before I was absolutely too freezing to continue. Another day, it snowed ten inches over night. It wasn't too cold, so I went running in the morning and completed my hour! Unfortunately, I covered only 3-4 miles as running in 15 degrees with ten inches of new snow isn't easy. After running I returned home to clear the driveway of snow via use of a shovel. I no longer was feeling lazy at this point because my whole family was asleep and I'd all ready completed an hour run. I went to work on the big long driveway. This was more difficult than the run, but eventually it was finished and we all headed to Stella's Bakery for a big fat cinnamin roll. I earned it!

I'm more than excited to be getting two new bikes this year. They are my dream road and time trial bike with by far and away the best of every single component. It will be incredible to get the ride them, satisfying every techno-geek cell in my body!

It's election season in the US, for the first time in my life I'm taking interest. It may just be that I'm of age, but perhaps there are other reasons. It will make for great entertainment this season while sitting around hotel rooms, lots of good TV.

Marc Rubin, Preston Miller, and myself are now all bonafide radio personalities. If that sounds scary to you, imagine how it sounds to me? We now have a contract for a weekly show on 1310 KXAM in Phoenix. It's called "Tri Harder Radio" and we're discussing everything related to triathlon and other things regarding health and wellness. Last night was our second show (we're on Tuesday nights at 7:00 PM) and we had on Dr. Dwight Lundell and Allison Levin from The Komen Foundation. We've managed to do ok so far and we figure we'll only get better, we're optimistic. Feel free to not be shy and tune in, or go check out the various shows in our radio show archive at TriScottsdale.org. Apparently, those stocker-esque die-hard fans can go online and watch us live in studio during the broadcast. For those of you who don't know, I have my hair slicked back and wear a little bow tie.

My dad used tell me that great champion marathoners and other endurance athletes like Tour De France riders fall into two mental categories. The first type of athlete possess such genius-like intelligence they are able to "levitate" themselves through the pain and get to the finish before all the other equally insanely talented competitors. The other category, are those champions who are purely animals, in both mind and body. They lack anything regarding intelligence and just put their heads down without regard for the pain that is invading their body while they push harder day after day. This would be similar to a greyhound track dog, not stopping until the artificial rabbit is in their mouth far past the finish line. It has come to my attention that since I'm not a genius, and I want to be a champion... I guess if I get there everyone will know which one I am!

See you at the Desert Du,
Lewis
