I love small, local races

Last Friday Marc Rubin twisted my arm all afternoon, and so we headed down to compete in the Splash n Dash event number 3 at Tempe Town Lake. I love competing in small local races and as it turns out this one was not all that small as around two hundred people showed up to race! Along with this, I guess a Friday night 6:00 PM start in Tempe helps get people out watching, as there seemed to be a real "crowd" at the event!

This race had a 750 meter swim followed by a 4k run. These splash n dashes are often fairly serious and some of the local kids can really fly as many of them are standout swimmers and perhaps run on their highschool cross country or track team. This aspect of the race series is so cool because it's such a good promotional tool to get younger people into multisport racing. Along with this, I was so excited to see so many TriScottsdale and Gage Racing jerseys out there, we're really growing as a group!

My plan was to swim hard and then hopefully not have to work too hard on the run as my legs were a little fatigued from a week of hard training. The race began and I took the swim out fast and one guy stayed on my feet the whole way. I came out of the water having done a good effort swim and went to put my shoes on when I noticed that it was a young guy with me. As it turns out it was 17 year old Michael Bull next to me, and he was running pretty quickly for a strong-looking swimmer kid! I ran hard to the first turn around (1k in) then slowed down to a firm pace for the final 3k and ran tempo to cross the line first. I was impressed with Michael though, he hung on for second and had some pretty seasoned triathletes working hard to chase him down! This is exactly what this series is about, guys like him who are going to be at the top of triathlon one day.

Thanks to 4 Peaks Racing for putting these events on, I'll support them every way I can, the future of triathlon depends on it! Results can be found at 4 Peaks Racing's site.

Thanks for checking in and reading, I'm headed to California for the Wildflower Half Ironman this Saturday, it's going to be a great event!

Cheers,
Lewis
