Encinitas Sprint Triathlon last weekend
I decided to venture over to John Duke's Encinitas Sprint Triathlon last weekend not knowing if I would be able to race the as my foot had not yet healed. A trip to San Diego is always nice, so I went anyway...
The day before the race it seemed unlikely I would compete as the skin was seemed weak and sore where my cut had been. I thought about duct tape, athletic tape, sticky band aids, anything to cover the area from sand and debris... I knew from experience all of this stuff will come off in a hard ocean swim and leave me vulnerable. I also knew that muscle and nerve under the skin had been damaged and the last thing I needed was to open this back up! Thankfully I called my plastic surgeon buddy Dr. Jerry Mancuso and he and my older brother told me to go for three coats of over-the-counter superglue! The stuff worked wonders, and two days later it's still on my foot but I was able to race.
The sprint tri took off on the beach with a good surf crashin' out in the ocean. There were eleven male pros, mostly local guys. I figured I could do well but knew that having not trained much for two weeks due to injury could really hurt me. I had a great swim, an even better bike, and then the run was fantastic as I comfortably ran a 16 minute 5k and could have gone faster! I won the event by around two minutes and am so excited to be fairly healthy and ready to race once again.
Next up, the Sahuarita Ranch Triathlon in Tucson on Memorial day and then the Honu 70.3 Half Ironman in Kona. These will test my form again headed into my most ambitious summer race schedule ever. Hopefully, they go well.
Congratulations to all those who competed for Tri-Scottsdale/Gage Racing this past weekend in Tempe. You guys just crushed the team competition! Blair and Shawn (brother n homie) were also pretty impressive in their rise through the triathlon ranks! See everyone in Tucson.
Cheers,
Lewis
